You bend down and struggle to rise
You bend down and struggle to rise. You can’t pick up a fork. You fight with the doorknob. Have any of these things happened to you?
Arthritis is the one of Canada’s top chronic conditions, affecting over 4 million people. It’s the leading cause of disability as over 600,000 Canadians with arthritis are unable to work.
With baby boomers aging, joint problems are increasingly common and call for new and natural treatments to help address the pain, discomfort, and stiffness they cause.
Role of hyaluronic acid
Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the body and in the greatest concentration in the joints and eyes. In the joints, it’s a component of synovial fluid, which acts as a cushion and lubricant for moving joint parts.
Hyaluronic acid is sometimes used as an injectable to treat joint problems. A new oral method of supplementation, however, provides another effective option.
Eggshell membrane
Natural eggshell membrane contains hyaluronic acid for maintaining healthy joint and connective tissues. Interestingly, eggshell membrane also contains other natural components that are often marketed for joint support. These include
Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulphate, necessary to help cartilage formation.
Dermatan sulfate is an important part of cartilage tissue and helps hold collagen in place.
Collagen can boost the production of components required for connective tissue formation and can lower joint inflammation.
Studies of eggshell membrane
Two clinical studies have been conducted to evaluate eggshell membrane as a treatment for pain and inflexibility of joint and connective tissue disorders.
Eleven (single-arm trial) and 28 (double-arm trial) patients received 500 mg of natural eggshell membrane once daily for four weeks and their responses were tested at seven and 30 days.
In both trials, supplementing resulted in significant improvements in flexibility and general pain after only seven days, and again at 30 days. Range-of-motion pain was tested in the single-arm trial and was found to be improved in 30 days. Stiffness decreased in 10 days, and there were no adverse reactions to the supplement in either arm of the study.
Reclaim activity
As the baby boomer population ages, one million more Canadians per decade will be diagnosed with arthritis until at least 2031.
Investigating natural eggshell cartilage and other ways to improve joint health and increase your activity will have a profound impact on your health and well-being—now and in the years to come.
